ANPR
ANPR stands for automatic number plate recognition. It bases one plate against approximately 20 million in under 5 seconds and shows whether the car is stolen, the registered owner is wanted, no insurance, no tax or MOT. This will also show if the vehicle in question has been known to be used in crime.
PNC
PNC is the Police National Computer and gives access to information about cars, people and adresses.
Police Radio
this enables the police to communicate for whatever reason they need to but also has a tracking device so that if an officer is in trouble and presses the panic button other officers can find him/her.
The Stinger
The stinger is a bed of hollow nails that penetrate the tyres if ran over and these are used in pursuits to slow the criminal down and bring them to a safe stop, for example by way of a T-PAC, which is the Tactical Pursuit And Containment, this is when a number of police vehicles box the suspect vehicle in and bring it to a slow and safe stop, sometimes they do it with no damage to the police cars, but with no room to open the doors of the car.
ASP
an ASP is the metal extendable baton they use to break windows or use reasonable force on the suspect.
CS gas
CS gas is a spray that they use if the suspect is in-compliant. It will make their eyes sore but only lasts for approximately 40-50 minutes. this is commonly known as pepper spray in America. Most people ask for water to be put in their eyes, this just makes the effect worse.
Handcuffs
The handcuffs British police use today are ones with a solid metal bar in the middle preventing most chances of escape. they are used for restraint, and will give you sore, swollen, and sometimes even bruised wrists if you try twisting them, or resisting when they are on.
Torch
used to see in dark places. but are also heavy so they can break windows if need be.
Leg restraints
These are used to protect the officers and general public from being kicked by the suspect. They are also used to prevent the suspect being able to flee from the officers if they need to do further investigations at the roadside.
The Enforcer
these are very heavy solid metal bars used to gain access to properties for example drug raids, or executing warrants. Also known as 'The Big Red Key' by officers.
Lantern
lantern is a wireless hand-held finger print device which gives results from the Police National Computer as to who the tested person is, this will be used if the police think you are giving them false details, and will reveal if you're wanted, or of other interest to the police.
Taser
Taser is an electrical gun which, shoots 4 barbs at the suspect and, will send 50,000 volts rushing through the body making them temporarily immobile for approximately 10-20 seconds.
Road closing/ Clearing equipment
This set of equipment includes:
Traffic cones- used to separate a traffic incident from the general public. Police tape- this is used to cordon off crime scenes to preserve any evidence. Tow Rope: to move any vehicles involved in road traffic collisions if they are in an obstructive, or dangerous position. Keep right/left signs- used to direct traffic in the case of a road traffic collision. Crowbar- used to help execute warrants on houses or, to gain forced access to a property if a well being call is made. flashing blue lights for the cones- used to make the cones more visible. Police Accident sign- used to warn the other drivers to slow down and expect delays. Fire Extinguisher- held in case a vehicle catches fire. Broom- to clear glass, or debris from the road after a collision to stop further accidents. Shovel- also used to clear debris from collisions. |
